Cherreads

Chapter 16 - [16]

"As cool as this, is old man, we need to get moving." I say to Dad getting an annoyed grunt from the man before a nod of acceptance.

"You're right we do." Dad says back, in agreement.

Looking around at our ragtag group I dig out the rest of my beef sticks and the two remaining granola bars that I have, and hand them out to Dad, Tim and Lex, of course I don't offer Lex a beefstick, I do make sure she gets both granola bars.

Dad tried to resist taking food from me when I should eat but we have a glare off and he caves first.

"Thank you." Tim and Lex thank me with sincere gratitude while Dad grumbles his feeling grumpy he caved to me.

We begin our hike through the park grounds, heading towards the visitor's center, and walk out into a relatively open area.

Dad stops pills out the map he took from the table in the conference room connected to the restaurant within the visitor's center, he hums as he consults the map.

"I'm tired, and I stink when I get back I'm gonna take a long hot bath and eat so much chocolate I'm going to puke!" Lex complains and I can tell Tim is liking the Ice Cream part.

"I want meat…lots and lots of meat." Tim adds on.

I chuckle at that, "Could go for a nice juicy steak…and a long hot bath." I say while looking at Lex and for some reason it makes Lex blush furiously, okay maybe it's the suggestive look I give her…that she's the steak…or the long hot bath part.

"The visitor's center should be just about a mile beyond that rise. If we keep…" Dad starts to explain and I look over the shoulder at his map, a sharp, loud and shrill animal cry interrupts him, and is soon repeated by many more animals.

Dad looks away from the map, "What…is? Can you tell me what they are, Tim?" Dad asks Tim and I smile for a man that hates kids, he's pretty good with them.

"Gallimimus…?" Tim says/asks, unsure if he's correct or not, the Gallimimus herd releases another mass series of calls.

Dad turns around, to face the direction the sound is coming from, dad squints at the animal cries that are growing much louder now, and is accompanied by a low rumble.

"They're flocking like birds." Dad murmurs having one of his theories further proven to be correct.

"Dad…they're flocking this way." I grunt and grab Tim's attention, then Lex's, "Get ready to run." I tell the two and take a few steps towards Dad grab his shoulder, "Dad we need to go, now!" I say to the man with urgency..but he stays rooted in place as he watches, the mass of dinosaurs dozens upon dozens of them, all heading right at us.

Dad finally figures it out, as I start pulling him along, "STAMPEDE!" Dad shouts.

"No fucking shit Sherlock!" I yell at him, "Look at them Alec, they're wheeling, in a uniform direction change…like a flock of birds evading a predator!" "Yup, let's fucking go!" I holler at him as a roar we're all familiar with fills the prairie…

"Oh, shit!" Dad shouts and the four of us take off, across the meadow, running towards the relative cover of the jungle. I soon realize I'm outpacing everyone so I turn back, pick up Tim and throw him over my shoulder, and then pick up Lex and throw her over my other shoulder.

Knowing Dad won't make it to the woods, we jump over a huge downed log, "When did you get so fast and strong? I mean you've always been fit but this…" "Not the time Dad." I say to the man as I push both him and the kids, into a bit of a hollow in the tree.

They cover their heads as the herd volts over the roots chunks of wood and fly everywhere as the herd plows overhead, their clawed feet striking the tree dangerously close to Dad and the kids…or at least they would if I wasn't using my body to shield them.

The stampede passes and I peer up, over the tree feeling a trickle of blood running down my head.

Dad pokes his head up to and looks towards the trees, which the herd is now running alongside, Rexy roads again and bursts out of the trees, ahead of the herd, cutting them off,

throwing them into disarray, scattering them everywhere.

'That was literally the direction we were walking in earlier…she's such a vision of primal beauty.' I think as I watch Rexy run down one of the Gallimimus, and sink her teeth into its neck.

Dad Tim and I rise to our feet, staring in wonder as Rexy eats her kill, "I wanna go…now!" Lex says but Dad and Tim are transfixed, watching Rexy eat.

"Woah!" Tim murmurs.

"Bet you'll never look at birds the same way again!" Dad snickers and

Tim nods in fascination, Rexy pauses in the middle of her meal and roars.

"Alec, please let's go!" Lex begs, "Okay keep low and follow me." I tell her and we take off, across the open plain, when Rexy roars again the others start to run past me while I look over my shoulder to see if Rexy noticed us, and she has.

"Guys, Rexy sees us…I'm going to lead her away." I shout to the others and before they can reject, I take off running back towards her.

Getting Rexy to chase me is easy. I lead her into the woods and circle around her, 'This is awesome, and I'm running so fast.'

Rexy roars in frustration as she crashes through another tree, I run straight at her, "REXY, I CHOSE YOU!!!" I shout as I jump thirty feet into the air and land on Rexy's head and smack my hand down on her skull, and feel a pull at my abdomen as I activate Dominate.

Alan Grant, Tim, and Lex scramble through the jungle, completely out

of breath, and exhausted, before they know it they arrive at the base of the big electrical fence that surrounds the main compound.

"We-we left him." Lex starts sobbing, and Tim hugs her as he starts to cry too.

Alan closes his eyes, his face looking anguished, then he opens them and

looks up at the fence, that must be over twenty feet high.

"We-we have to go back for him." Lex says,

"No, we can't…Alec…Alec did what he did to save us…we need to honor that, we need to honor my son by staying alive…now this is going to be a bit of a climb…I know you guys are tired but do you think you guys can make it?" Alan shakes his head and shoots down going back for Alec even as tears run down his face.

"Nope…" Tim mutters.

"It's way too high." Lex says as she starts angling her body to turn around and run.

Alan grabs a stick and climbs up on the cement ledge that the metal pillars are connected to, he stops and looks up at the warning lights on the fence, seeing that the lights are out.

He pokes the wire with a stick, no sparks fly.

"Well, I guess that means the power's off, still I'm not trusting the fence built by Hammond. He doesn't have a great track record so far. Sorry." Alan says and then pauses and apologizes to the kids after all that's their Grandpa he's talking about, while he taps the line with his foot for good measure.

Looking behind his back at the two distraught kids, that are hugging each other as they cry, while staring in the direction they came from.

'Don't do it Alan, these kids need you..you can't break down yet, you have to keep pushing forward and get them to safety.' wanting to distract himself and the kids from Alec and his sacrifice so that they could escape, Alan speaks up. "I'm going to test the fence now." Alan says voice thick with emotions of loss and pain, but he moves forward slowly and lays both hands on a cable and closes his fingers around it.

Alan's body shakes, he screams real screams venting as much of the loss, pain and anger he is feeling at himself, Alec, Ellie for talking them into coming here and most of all John Hammond.

"NOOO DOCTOR GRANT, WE CAN'T LOSE YOU TOO!!!" The kids scream…and Alan realizes just how in poor taste this effort has been he stops, and turns around slowly...and smiles wickedly.

"That's not funny." Lex mutters while glaring hatefully at the man but at least she has stopped crying.

"That was great!" Tim laughs and smiles while subconsciously wiping away the wetness from his face.

Not too far away in the distance, the T-rex suddenly roars, without a second's delay, both kids leap up onto the cement base.

"Who's a good girl?" I ask Rexy while scratching the underside of her jaw and she makes a pleased sound as her jaws shake.

"Yes you are, yes you are." I continue to pet Rexy while sending orders on how to react to me and what I do through a mental link, though on her end there's really only raw emotions and impressions sent back.

Suddenly what sounds like a bomb going off in the distances frightens Rexy making her stand up and roar in challenge.

'Umm, I don't remember that from the movie, and its been like eleven years since I read the book…does Muldoon have a rocket launcher…?' I wonder as I pat Rexy's leg then jump up onto her back, "On ward my trust Cretaceous Steed!" I cheer from Rexy's back and take a tree limb to the face for the effort which knocks me off of her back, landing on my feet, I groan in annoyance.

"Guess I can't be a dinosaur rider." I grumble as I start running after Rexy who is already breaking out into the herbivore grazing plains, sending her a mental command to slow down.

Reaching the fence with Rexy waiting just in the treeline I see Dad, Lex and Tim walking away from the electric fence, 'The fence is still off, why the fuck is the fence still off?!' I wonder as I send a command to Rexy to charge through the fence, jumping up and hoping on her back as she does so and channeling my healing into her just to be on the safe side.

"We better go check out the power station or relay whatever it's called…even if she's not exactly like she was in the movies Ellie is important to Dad." I grumble and we take off in the direction where I believe the power station is.

Thanks to being on Rexy's back the Power station is easy to spot and so is the blackened crater from an RPG rocket, and the chunks of crispy Raptor, I see Muldoon moving through the vegetation slowly, the man doesn't see Clever Girl or the other one who just wait as he walks into their trap.

Rexy tramples through the vegetation and catches the raptor who isn't, c

Clever Girl in her maw, just as it was about to pounce on Muldoon, knocking the man onto his ass, in the process I jump off Rexy's back as she begins chomping down on the one raptor while pulling my knife from behind my back and lowering my stance as I face off with Clever Girl, we start circling each other.

Clever Girl snaps her jaws at me and makes clicks but I snarl back as best I can, when she does a test charge I dive forward, knocking her right foot out from underneath her, making her fall over onto her side.

Suddenly I hear the sound of a shotgun ring out and a fountain of blood explodes from Clever Girl's neck.

But that doesn't take her down, she start to get back on her feet, seeing her injured I shake off my desire to tame her and bury my knife in her eyes socket, she falls to the ground twitching.

"Did I see you jumping off of the back of the Tyrannosaur?" Muldoon asks me as he lowers his gun slightly but keeps it trained on Clever Girl, who's chest has stopped rising and falling.

"Would you believe me if I said no?" I ask the man, partially joking, partially serious.

"No…I don't care how, frankly if it weren't for you I'd have died in that ambush…now we better go help that girl you came with…get the power back on, so we can call for a ride off of this bloody death trap of an island."
